Welcome to FIVS!

FIVS is a world-wide organization designed to represent all sectors of the wine, spirits and beer industries. Click here to view a brief introduction. Our members include producers, distributors, importers, exporters and trade associations. FIVS interfaces on behalf of its members with many international organizations. FIVS was founded in July 1951 and our headquarters is in Paris, France.

FIVS organizes meetings for our members to encourage dialogue and the exchange of information; works on areas of common interest to help members attain their objectives; interacts with international organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the OECD and the International Organization of the Vine and Wine; and provides statistical, regulatory and other information to our members. FIVS advocates only those views that represent consensus positions of our members. FIVS is currently pursuing strategic initiatives that further industry objectives in such areas as sustainability, certification standards, and the treatment of fermented beverages, among others.

The consumption of wine, beer and spirits is an integral part of normal life in virtually all societies. As the world becomes ever more integrated, the industry faces differing and often competing views of the proper place of alcohol beverages in society because, as with many other choices in life, there are benefits and risks. While the scientific evidence of the healthful benefits of moderate consumption continues to mount, FIVS also recognizes that excessive consumption can be harmful. To that end, FIVS encourages appropriate and responsible enjoyment by those who choose to consume alcohol beverage products.

FIVS Strategic Initiatives

Sustainable Development:

FIVS is pursuing a strategic initiative on “sustainable development” focused in the wine sector. This initiative, applying sustainable environmental principles to the global wine sector (“The Global Wine Sector Environmental Sustainability Principles” - GWSESP), recognizes that the continued health of the wine industry rests entirely on natural resources, namely: solar energy, an appropriate climate, clean water, healthy soils, and the successful integration of these elements within sound ecological tenets. These principles embrace the concept that the protection and the development of these natural resources by practices of sound sustainable development are an imperative.

Further to this initiative, FIVS has been engaged in developing an international protocol for the calculation of carbon footprints. Please click on the link below to learn more about this initiative.

FIVS is now also in a position to share the necessary information for a user to operate version 1.2 of the “Wine Industry Greenhouse Gas Calculator.” The calculator has been developed to incorporate all aspects of Greenhouse Gas emissions from the wine industry as identified by the Wine Industry Protocol. The calculator and Protocol are being refined, so future versions may be offered. Please click on the links below to download the user's guide and the calculator:

Contributions of the Industry: FIVS members have conducted studies to demonstrate how different segments of the alcohol beverage industry contribute economically to national economies. One study, completed in January of 2007, uses a standard methodology which includes direct, indirect, and induced economic effects in order to present a complete picture of the economic impact of the grape, wine, grape juice, table grape and raisin industries in terms of employment, agricultural statistics, product revenues, taxes, and many other indices. Please click on the links below to access this recent study and related material, and visit our Public Forums for additional information.

New Content in the Virtual Library!

Ezine reports are archived and housed in the Virtual Library. We have added ezines on additive labeling proposals in the United States, the European Commission's Communication on the social aspects of alcohol beverage consumption, a study by the OECD in the area of counterfeit activity and much, much more.
