Trade & Global Economics

Open markets keep wine moving.

Wine is one of the world's most globally traded agricultural products, sustaining jobs, investment, and rural economies across producing and importing countries alike.

Yet market access is never guaranteed - tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and diverging regulatory requirements can restrict consumer access to diverse products, raise costs and disrupt trade with little warning.

FIVS works to secure fair, open, and predictable market access for wine, engaging policymakers to dismantle unjustified trade barriers and reduce regulatory friction across international markets. We monitor and comment on relevant notifications to the World Trade Organization (WTO), including under the TBT and SPS Agreements, to flag emerging measures that could affect wine trade before they take effect.

Through evidence-based advocacy and early insight into emerging policy and regulatory developments, we help the industry anticipate change and lower compliance costs.

Addressing Tariff and Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs)

FIVS champions open, rules-based trade for the global wine sector, opposing tariff and non-tariff barriers that restrict market access without justification.

We engage with governments, respond to WTO notifications, and promote science-based, international regulations that support efficient trade. We also work to keep wine out of broader trade disputes, opposing tariffs that raise costs and disrupt global supply chains regardless of their original target.

This advocacy helps keep wine moving, and markets open, offering consumers choice, around the world.

Digital Labelling & Regulatory Harmonisation

FIVS has developed the Good Regulatory Principles for Electronic Labelling (e-labelling) to support modern, consistent and future-ready regulatory approaches. E-labelling can complement traditional labels by improving the way product information is shared with consumers, regulators and supply chain partners, offering greater flexibility and enabling timely updates across markets.

This approach supports greater international regulatory alignment, reduces unnecessary market-specific variations, and helps streamline compliance processes, contributing to more efficient supply chains and improved market access for the global wine sector.

Wine’s Contribution to Economies

FIVS members, partners, and others have conducted studies to demonstrate how different segments of the wine sector contribute to national economies, employment, trade, and rural communities around the world. Recent reports have been produced for  — including major wine producers such as Australia, Chile, Europe, South Africa and the United States.

At the global level, the OIV's State of the World Vine and Wine Sector 2025 highlights the wine sector's enduring economic importance, with vineyards covering approximately 7.0 million hectares worldwide, global wine production reaching 227 million hectolitres, and international wine exports valued at €33.8 billion. Together, these figures underscore wine's significant contribution to economic activity, trade, and livelihoods across the globe.
