Wine & Society

Wine is the world’s most culturally significant drink, with deep heritage and an exciting future.

Rooted in agriculture, it has shaped communities, built multi-generational family businesses and continues to bridge the gap between historic ways of life and our modern world.

FIVS is the global voice of wine. Our role includes promoting responsible consumption while making the case for wine’s enduring cultural value in an ever-changing market.

We also act as the wine sector’s interlocutor in global policy forums, including with the World Health Organization (WHO), where we contribute expertise and represent the sector in global discussions on reducing harmful consumption.

As part of this responsibility, we advocate for evidence-based policies to combat harmful drinking and promote moderation as a practice, while also working to protect the wine sector and its deep significance to people worldwide.

Commitment to Responsible Consumption

Wine is a shared cultural heritage shaped by centuries of tradition and craftsmanship. The sector promotes moderate, responsible consumption as part of a balanced lifestyle. Since its launch in 2011, Wine & Society Initiatives have highlighted concrete actions from the global community that support this commitment.

Ethical Trading

FIVS adopted the FIVS Social Sustainability Principles for Ethical Trading (FSSPET) in 2017.

This set of principles and values is a foundation for FIVS members in the wine sector to incorporate social responsibility into their businesses, guided by common norms that underscore the need to respect human rights and to ensure lawful, fair, and ethical behaviour in all their commercial dealings.

Advertising & Marketing

FIVS Guiding Principles for Advertising and Marketing for Alcohol Beverages is a guidance document that was originally produced in 2011, with revisions in 2015 and 2021.

They offer principles for consideration when creating codes of practice for the advertising and marketing of alcoholic beverages.

Social Sustainability

FIVS partners with Wine in Moderation, the global social responsibility programme, and jointly promotes moderation and contributes to reducing harmful drinking worldwide.

This partnership reflects our shared commitment to responsibility, education and the long-term sustainability of the wine sector.
