49th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Labelling

FIVS is the only alcohol body with Official Observer status at Codex Alimentarius where many future national food rules originate. FIVS was pleased to participate in the 49th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Labelling (CCFL49), held in Ottawa, Canada, from 11–15 May.

Our delegation, led by Laura Gelezuinas, Jamie J. Ferman, and Caroline Henderson, actively engaged in discussions aimed at ensuring Codex standards continue to support both international trade and consumer protection.

Key priorities for FIVS included:

  • Contributing to discussions on alcohol labelling. With no consensus among Codex Member Governments, no work on alcohol labelling will go forward at this stage. This is in line with the FIVS position – that the proposals were duplicative and unnecessary.
  • Ensuring proposals on place of origin and place of harvest for spices do not unintentionally affect established approaches to wine origin labelling.
  • Supporting progress on precautionary allergen labelling to help provide consumers with clear and meaningful information.

We congratulate Codex Members and Observers on a productive session and the advancement of three important texts relating to:

  • Provisions relevant to joint presentation and multipack formats.
  • Guidelines on the use of precautionary allergen labelling (PAL).
  • Guidelines on the application of food labelling provisions in emergencies.

FIVS looks forward to continuing its constructive engagement in Codex discussions in support of practical, science-based, and internationally harmonised labelling approaches.
