Voices from Our Scholars: Paola Hiscock García

Since 2017, FIVS has awarded an incredible learning journey for a successful FIVS member applicant through the JJBScholarship.

This year's scholar Paola Hiscock García of FEV shared her reflections on her participation at the Wine & Law Program – A Jean Monnet Chair, Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne. Special thanks to Theodore Georgopoulos for delivering such a professional course. This collaboration continues to be invaluable for industry-academic #partnership and future business leaders.

Q: What inspired you to apply?

A colleague told me about it, and I applied eagerly. Being new to the wine sector, it was a great #opportunity to learn about the industry and Champagne, and connect with professionals worldwide. The enriching experience offered invaluable knowledge and visits to prestigious Champagne houses, as well as significant organisations such as the Comité interprofessionnel du vin de champagne. Most importantly, I engaged with great participants, high-level professionals, and students with a comprehensive understanding into the global #winesector.

Q: Could you share a bit about your career journey so far?

As a lawyer with a master’s degree in corporate legal practice, I worked at EY, AXA, and McDonald’s advising on marketing, franchising, & procurement. There, I received an offer to join FEV. It seemed like a fascinating challenge and opportunity.

Q: What was your highlight of the course?

It has been an excellent meeting point to connect with people from all over the world involved in the sector. Many belong to international organisations that I am also a member of, so I am sure we will meet again. Also, getting to know Champagne and being able to taste different types, a product I was previously somewhat unfamiliar with.

Q: And the biggest surprise/major takeaway that you can apply in your job in future?

This year’s course focused on alcohol beverage advertising in different markets. While I knew that it’s a highly restricted area, I was surprised by how much more restrictive some countries are. For example, I was unaware of the existence of France's Loi Evin, created in 1991, which imposes strict restrictions on alcohol and tobacco advertising to reduce consumption.

Q: What would you say to future applicants?

Apply without hesitation! FIVS offers an amazing opportunity with excellent wine sector professionals. Participants have the opportunity to learn about #Champagne and network with organisations in the sector, which is interesting due to the diverse insights they can provide, bringing learnings back to the sector and FIVS.

Q: Any final reflections on the opportunity?

This partnership enhances professionalisation in the sector. Academic partners contribute with research & theoretical approaches, while trade bodies such as FIVS can provide solutions to practical problems, creating a mutually beneficial relationship. These programs keep professionals updated with the latest industry developments.
