FIVS represented the global wine sector at the 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC48) in Rome, Italy (10–13 November), through Laura Gelezuinas.
Codex Alimentarius, a joint initiative of the FAO and WHO, plays a vital role in shaping international food safety standards and fair trade practices – standards that serve as the reference for WTO dispute settlements. As a Codex Observer since 1981, FIVS has been instrumental in ensuring that the voice of wine is heard and respected in these global discussions.
At CAC48, two new wine additives – 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘴 and 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘥 – were officially adopted into the General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA). This achievement marks an additional step towards greater international alignment, helping to reduce non-tariff trade barriers and facilitate global trade.
FIVS is proud to have supported this important progress, alongside other Official Observers such as OENOPPIA and the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine. Our work continues to ensure that science-based, harmonised standards guide the future of the wine sector worldwide.
Because when the voice of wine is strong internationally, the entire industry benefits.
